On this Veteran's Day, this poem I memorized in grade school comes to mind:
Our Flag
You may call it an old piece of bunting;
You may call it an old tattered rag;
But thousands have died for its honor
And shed their best blood for the flag.
You may call in an old piece of bunting;
You may call it an old tattered rag;
But Freedom has made it majestic,
And Time has ennobled Our Flag.

To all those who have died for its honor, and who have shed their best blood for the flag: thank you. To those who fought and returned home: thank you. I am indebted to you both beyond all measure.
May I too work to keep this nation free, to honor your selfless sacrifice.
