If Not Us, Who Will Speak Up?

Oh what powerful words to consider, as the news around us swirls of persecutions and the squelching of freedom. May we not be the last one standing. 

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

I want to speak out. Before no one is left to speak up for me. Let the History books not say "They did nothing" but instead "a world was set free because they stood, and were a voice for those who cried for freedom."
